About Faraway

Faraway is an independent literary journal based out of southern California's Inland Empire. It was begun early in 2007 by a group of friends who share a lifelong love of writing and reading, and it is no coincidence that many of the contributors to the first issue work at a bookstore. Several of Faraway's initial members aspire to careers in writing novels, and decided therefore to begin publishing themselves. Conceived of as an independent venture without advertising or outside funding, Faraway is financed by the writers and artists who compose each issue, in addition to generous donations from friends, family and readers.

The first issue of Faraway was published in April of 2007. A limited number of copies were made in several mixed mediums-color and black-and-white versions of the paper addition, as well as publication onto CD-ROMs, and digital publication online. The second issue will be published early in June in greater quantities. So far, over a dozen writers and artists, from places as diverse as Los Angeles, Vermont, and Norway, have contributed to Faraway, with more people coming forward with submissions every day. The content in Faraway has ranged from poems about Helen of Troy, and stories about a drowning stepson, to acrylic and watercolor paintings, and digitally-altered photographs. There is an exciting variety of styles and content, and something that everyone interested in art or literature can enjoy. The editors of Faraway are always looking for more submissions, so if you would like to see your work published and read by a growing audience from places all around the world, submit to Faraway at farawayjournal@gmail.com.

Faraway's main goal is to get new up-and-coming writers and artists into print, so that they can receive the exposure that they deserve. Art and literature are the foundations of culture, and are an important part of society. In addition to cherishing the great works written hundreds of years ago by Shakespeare or carved by Michelangelo, it is important to continue producing art, to make it easy for new writers and artists to become known, and to support these people in their ventures. If you have an interest in literature, if you enjoy a good read now and then that isnt the James Patterson drivel that flows into bookstores in an endless stream, if you believe in supporting the arts, or if you are a writer in any genre, an artist in any medium, or a musician in any style, Faraway has what you are looking for, and can help you as you start out along the path to becoming an artist.

To submit to Faraway, please send an email to farawayjournal@gmail.com, and attach either a word processor file (Times New Roman, 12 point font), or a .jpeg image file. There are no length requirements, and we are tolerant of all styles. However, correct grammar and spelling are absolutely necessary. Additionally, since Faraway does not receive outside funding, we ask that each writer or artist included in a given issue help defray the costs of printing by paying for the pages that their work requires. For instance, if your story is four pages long, it will cost approximately ten dollars to print one hundred copies. We consider this a small price to pay to have your work in print, and also to be published online for innumerably more people to see. Arrangements can be made if there are extenuating financial circumstances, so don't be off-put by our request for money.
