A Family Matter by Josh Mitchell

Christopher Caldwell crosses the space between the stove and kitchen sink for what could have been the fiftieth time tonight. He turns the faucet to fill the kettle he’s holding. Returning to the stove he starts to boil water for more coffee. He then hears the door open and close in the adjacent washroom. His brother Michael now enters the kitchen. It’s 11:40pm and a single light overhanging the tiny kitchen table illuminates the small room.

“You’ve been gone awhile,” Christopher says. Michael pulls a chair from the table and sits without saying a word. Reaching into his pocket he grabs a pack of cigarettes, pulls one out and places it between his lips.  Outstretching his arm, but without looking up, he offers one to his brother.  Christopher quietly accepts one and the two brothers light their cigarettes in unison, and both exhale large plumes of smoke, Michael’s slightly larger.

“Dialogue I”

From the Los Angeles Times

I have been debating with a few of my colleagues on the following question:

“If you were Luke Skywalker and had to sneak into Mordor to destroy the ‘one ring’ who would you want as your faithful companion?”

You’d have to pick someone from the Star Wars universe.

There has been much debate.  Two candidates have been more popular than others.  Who would you take?

Tulips in the Spring

I’ve scratched & sniffed my life away

Petty people with petty problems have all but crowded my petty life.

I’ve held my scorn like a bouquet of roses

Red with rage;

I’ve stood there and smiled

While patiently waiting for the return of common sense.

Before I thought my own thoughts

They were fed to me

By an angry hand with a jagged spoon.

I’ve closed my eyes & smelled the scent of life;

Which always reminds me of the stench of death,

Tulips in the spring.

Why do all roads lead to Rome?

Is there no better place to go?

What’s in the new Faraway?
